Grass And Concrete Website Background

It’s been a while since I have posted a custom website background. This was built with the concrete textures that I posted about a month ago.

This background is dark and grungy, just the way I like it. You can easily edit the PSD and change colors, size, quality etc. I also tossed in a ready to use compressed image in the zip file.

Recommended CSS for this:

background: #000 url(IMAGE-URL-HERE) top center no-repeat;

Free WordPress Theme: Gauze v1.0

I just finished a new WordPress theme! It’s called Gauze. The name came from the pattern I used for the background. This theme is pretty basic but I did add a few nice features that I think you all might like.

Optional featured image on post pages.
Wide page layout option.
Custom Flicker, Twitter and author bio widgets.

This theme is no longer available.

NomNom Twenty Eleven Child Theme By Zeaks

I have been happily following Zeaks for a long time now. One of the main reasons is that he is one of the most helpful WordPress designers I have ever worked with. Zeaks builds some really cool WordPress child themes. He is very thoughtful about what features he adds to his themes. His latest release is called NomNom and its awesome!

Here are some of the features that are included with this theme.

Added 3 new layouts, Wide one column, narrow width left sidebar, narrow with right sidebar.
Added 6 new color schemes.
Added round corners to wrapper
Added NomNom Options page
Added Google Font selector
Added tabbed content shortcode
Fixed dropdown menu borders (should look better with default color scheme)
Fixed errors reported by Theme Check
Added excerpt length function to compensate for different width layouts, see functions.php

Blue Splatter Theme

After I finished my site I changed the header and colors and made another Twenty Eleven child theme for you all to download. Keep in mind that this theme uses the featured thumbnail option for each post.

So before you post anything you will need to login into your WordPress admin area, find the menu called settings and then click on media. Next change the thumbnail settings to a width of 600px and a height of 175px. Make sure you crop the area of the image that you want to show as your featured thumbnail.

Changes I made:

I again made the side width larger. Reduced the white space on the sides of the theme. You can use any header you want the title text will stay the same. The WordPress credits in the footer is floated to the right.

I also included the Photoshop PSD file for the header. Its located in the headers folder.

Update: 8-22-11.
Header image and single page layout has been fixed.

JK Twenty Eleven Child Theme

I just finished my first Twenty Eleven child theme for WordPress! I added a wide side bar, moved the site title on top of the header image.

The new size for the header is 1000px width X 175px height.

The font I added is called Oswald from Google fonts.

I forgot to add the CSS for the wp-pagenai plugin.Â After you install the theme. Upload the file pagenavi-css.css to your theme directory.

Twenty Ten Black And White Floral Background And Header

Finally had some time to build another custom Twenty Ten background and header set! This one is a black and white with a floral design. I also included a starter PSD. So if you have Photoshop you can play around and build your self a design.

Upload the background and under display settings apply these settings.

Position: Center

Repeat: No Repeat

Attachment: Scroll

Color: #FFFFFF

About the starter PSD.

Make sure your design is under the light blue color. That represents the WordPress blog wrapper.

After you are done with your design just hide that light blue layer and save your background.

(Right click and save as) Twenty Ten Starter PSD

Feel free to try this out and you won’t find any trouble updating this for your site on your dedicated server.

Grunge Background From The City Theme

Here is the basic version of The City theme background. I was thinking maybe someone could get some use out of it. I think this would make a great website background! Its free and for Non-commercial use only.

The City, Free WordPress Weaver Sub-theme

Here is a sub-theme I built the for the weaver wordpress theme.

What is weaver you ask?

Site: wpweaver.info

“Weaver is based on the standard WordPress 3 Twenty Ten theme. You can tweak colors and layout to your heart’s content – all without having to know a single thing about HTML or CSS. More advanced users can add their own style rules for extreme control of the theme.”

Weaver is great so far. It’s really easy to build your own custom theme. After I punch a few free designs out I will build one for my site.

Sub-theme Install:

1. Visit http://wpweaver.info/themes/ download the Weaver theme and then upload it to your server.

2. Login to your WP-admin area.

3. Click themes, find Weaver and click Activate.

4. In the WordPress menu under Appearance click on Weaver Admin

5. Click on Save/Restore Themes.

6. Find Upload file saved on your computer. Upload city-theme_subtheme.wvr

7. Under Appearance in the WordPress menu. Click on Background.

8. Upload City_header_bg.jpg.

9. Apply these settings to the background.

Position: Center

Repeat: No Repeat

Attachment: Scroll

Color: #252525

How To Get The Theme Showcase To Show Child Themes

Today I threw together a quick page to show off some of the child themes I have built. I installed a plugin called WordPress Theme Showcase Plugin Built by Brad Williams. Everything worked like the plugin should but instead of showing the child theme screen shots all I would see is the stock Twenty Ten Theme screen shot.

So after digging around a little I made a small edit to the plugin and now my the plugin is showing the screen shots from my child themes. If your using this plugin and want the same result here is how I got it work.

First back up the plugin. Then find line 113 in your editor.

You should see this:
$screenshot_url = $themes[$theme_name]['Theme Root URI'] .’/’ .$template .’/’ .$screenshot;

After my edit:
$screenshot_url = $themes[$theme_name]['Theme Root URI'] .’/’ .$stylesheet .’/’ .$screenshot;

I changed .$template to .$stylesheet

Twenty Ten Child Theme Demos

Transparent Twenty Ten Child Theme

You might be wondering why I built another transparent Twenty Ten theme. Well that last one I made wasn’t a child theme. So I decided to make another one. This time the menu is better, the wrapper is centered. I did use the same background image, its located in the images folder.
